abrasion resistance
One of the most important parameters in checking the performance of tires and controlling the quality of the final product is the tire’s resistance to wear. In the discussion of standard laboratory tests to check the abrasion resistance of a rubber piece, the best and most common method available is to determine the abrasion resistance using a rotating cylindrical device. The reference standards for this test are ISO 4649, ASTM D 5693 and the national standard. Iran under number 7900, which have a relatively similar test method.
This machine consists of a rotating cylinder covered with an abrasive sheet of a specific material and grain (mesh size) (usually 60-grit aluminum oxide). The device includes a cylindrical opening for holding samples, and cylindrical samples with a diameter of 16 mm and a height of at least 6 mm are placed inside this holder after being prepared from the original sample of vulcanized or heat-treated rubber. The test piece is moved horizontally by this holding tool in the direction of the axis of the rotating cylinder of the device and is subjected to abrasion with the abrasive sheet. For this purpose, a certain pressure is applied by applying a force of 5 to 20 newtons with the help of certain weights on the test piece, depending on the hardness of the tested sample, and finally, the amount of abrasion resistance after traveling a certain length distance and wearing the test piece With the abrasive sheet, it is expressed in terms of volume changes (mm3). This test should be performed on three samples and the average result should be reported. To calculate the volume changes, the density of the samples must be calculated first, and then the volume changes are calculated by measuring the changes in the mass of the sample due to wear and using the density.
