FKM

Fluoro elastomer known as Viton is a type of synthetic rubber that has high resistance to heat.

FKM - fluorocarbon elastomer (Viton)

Fluoro elastomer known as Viton is a type of synthetic rubber that has high resistance to heat.

Viton is compatible with oily environments, hydraulic oil, aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, as well as dilute acidic environments.

Viton’s performance is suitable in high temperature, corrosive, chemical and high oxygen environments.

Disadvantages of Wyton:

  • Low wear resistance
  • At very high or very low temperatures, it loses its flexibility and becomes hard.
  • At very high temperature, it releases hydrogen fluoride, which is toxic.
  • Incompatible with the family of ketones such as acetone, methyl ethyl ketone
  • Incompatible with organic acids

Explanations about Wyton FKM

Fluoroelastomer or FKM is a class of synthetic rubber designed to perform at very high temperatures. FKM offers exceptional levels of chemical, heat and oil resistance, while providing a service life above 200°C. FKM is not a single unit but a family of fluoropolymers. Fluoroelastomers or FKM (sometimes called Viton FKM.) can be classified with fluorine content of 66%, 68%, 70% respectively. This means that FKM rubber that has a high fluorine content is more resistant to fluids derived from increased fluorine levels.

Wyton FKM

Viton is a brand name for fluoroelastomers named by DUPONT Functional Elastomers Company. This fluoroelastomer – FKM Viton – was introduced in 1957 to meet the requirements of the aerospace industry as a high performance elastomer. The use of Viton quickly spread in other industries including automotive, chemical industry, fluid power. Viton is the most specified fluoroelastomer, which is well known for its excellent heat resistance, excellent resistance to the attack of fuels and chemicals. This Viton FKM fluoroelastomer is common worldwide based on ISO 9000 and ISO/TS 16949 standards.

Applications of FKM

FKM has long-term reliability even in harsh environmental conditions. A list of its uses is given below:

  • Aerospace: O-ring seals for fuel, lubricants, valve seals, fuel hoses, fuel injector o-rings, tank door and quick connect, exhaust pipe. valve liners, roller covers, sheet/cut washers, etc.
  • automobile manufacturing: Shaft Seals, Valve Check Valves, Diaphragms, Military Fire Clamps, Electrical Connectors, Tire Valve Stem Seals, Jet Engine Clips, Threshold Washers, etc.
  • Industrial: Hydraulic o-ring seals and hydraulic systems, manifold gaskets, fuel tank, firewall seals, engine seals, siphon hose oil system, gaskets (valve and manifold), etc.

FKM is widely used as a group of synthetic rubbers that offer a high level of resistance to chemicals, oils, and heat. This type of rubber can be used in making seals, O-rings and hoses for various high performance applications in the automotive, aerospace and petrochemical industries.
